Internet Connection
The most common cause of CenturyLink email issues is often overlooked. You should make sure your internet connection is working properly. You must be connected to the internet to be able send and receive email or manage your account. Even if you have an internet connection, it is important to test the speed of your internet to see how fast or slow it may be. Sometimes your internet speed can be very slow, and this could cause email problems. However, this is not always true so make sure to check.
The internet speed can be checked via sites that measure it, or you can open multiple web pages in different tabs. To ensure a proper connection, make sure you check all cables and network devices. If any of these fail, you will know why your email is acting up.
Make sure to check the Email Server Settings
If you haven’t yet found the cause of the problem, the next thing to look at is your email server settings. Three ways can the CenturyLink email server communicate with your email programs:
- POP3 – POP3 stands for Post Office Protocol. This method stores all your email just like a postal office. POP3 works like a store and forward type of service. POP3 deletes an email from its server after it has been downloaded by the client.
- SMTP – SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. This option allows you to send your email from one place to another, between multiple servers before it reaches your computer. This option is used by servers to forward messages the correct destination.
- IMAP – IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. This is an upgrade to POP3. IMAP allows you maintain your email, unlike POP3, which deletes the email once it reaches the client. This can be done from anywhere, and you don’t need to transfer anything.
Antivirus Software should be turned off
After you’ve completed the first two steps and have not found an issue, it’s time to move on to the third. You will need to verify that your antivirus software is not installed. If such software is found, disable it. This will be a quick test to see if your email account is acting strangely. Sometimes antivirus software can detect emails as threats, and this could be why your emails aren’t getting through.
You should therefore temporarily disable antivirus software and go to your email. Once you are done, enable the firewall and antivirus software. CenturyLink will resolve any issues you may find. To avoid further problems, make sure you enable firewall and antivirus software even if there are no issues.
You can empty your email folder
Sometimes, the problem isn’t a major one. It is as simple as having an overflowing inbox or an empty email folder. This can cause many problems with your email. This problem can be solved in a few clicks. You can simply empty your inbox, and then delete any unnecessary emails that have been accumulated over time. Even if you don’t completely empty your inbox, it is important to delete any that you do not need.
The following table will give you an idea of the size of CenturyLink’s mailbox:
- Sending emails takes 10MB
- Limit 35 messages per hour for Webmail and SMSTP
- 700 MB email box storage limit
- 50 contacts per message
