High-quality screenshots can be taken on any Mac computer. You can edit them or share them however desired. You will also have the ability to take video of your screen if you purchased or upgraded your Mac in 2018.
These are five methods to take screenshots on your Mac.
Quick tip – Your Mac allows you to take screenshots and videos of your screen. For more information, see our screen recording on a Mac article.

Shift + Comand + 4: Capture a section or window
1. Click Shift + Command + Four.
2 The crosshair will appear on your mouse cursor. To select an area on your screen, click and drag the crosshair.
3. Release the trackpad or mouse button to capture the area. Or press the Esc key for cancellation.
This is not the only thing you can do with this technique. You can unlock additional options by pressing Shift + Command+ 4.
- Capture a specific window: Press Shift + Comand + 4, then hit the spacebar. The crosshair will transform into a camera. Click on the capture button by hovering the cursor of the camera over the window. It will be surrounded by a gray border when the screenshot has been saved.
- Set the size and shape. Drag the crosshair to highlight an area. Then press and hold the Spacebar. This will lock the box and prevent it from changing in size. Drag the box to any place on the screen and release the spacebar to take a screenshot.
- Adjust the height: Drag the crosshair to highlight an area. Then, hold and press the Shift key. This will allow you to adjust the box’s height and width. The Shift key allows you to toggle between width and height. To take a screenshot, release the trackpad or mouse button.

The Screenshot app is available in the current macOS versions (Mojave and Catalina, Big Sur Big Sur, Monterey and Ventura).
1. To open Screenshot, press Shift + Command 5. At the bottom of your screen will be a small menu panel.

When you take a picture, this option will make a small thumbnail appear in the lower-right corner. The thumbnail will disappear after a few seconds and the screenshot will not be saved to your computer.
To open the screenshot in another window, click on this thumbnail. You can:
- Type or draw the image.
